Evil Geniuses make group stage exit after losses to Liquid & 100 Thieves
It’s the end of the road for Evil Geniuses in Poland as the North American Counter-Strike team has been eliminated from IEM Katowice. It was 100 Thieves who put the nail in the coffin of EG’s tournament hopes, getting revenge for the 2-0 loss 100T was handed at BLAST Premier Spring Series 2020.
EG opened up their IEM Katowice run with a 2-1 win over MAD Lions before falling in a North American derby against Team Liquid 2-1 to put them into the elimination match against a familiar opponent.
It looked to be another day in the park in terms of this match up which so frequently went the way of EG as the North Americans pulled off a 16-12 victory on Inferno to take the one map advantage and move on to Nuke, the map they’d defeated Liquid on the day before.
A strong performance out of Aaron “AZR” Ward and Joakim “jkaem” Myrbostad would set Australian side up for victory as they put up 101.4 and 96.5 average damage per round respectively in a 16-12 win.
Dust2 would be the decider and an early 7-2 lead had it looking like EG had found their footing and were looking to ride their momentum into the sunset. 100 Thieves weren’t ready to ride so easily, however, bouncing back with five of the six remaining rounds to only be down by one swapping to the T side.
The 100T offensive was too much to handle for EG as they only managed to stop four of the 13 rounds played out before AZR’s side hit the 16 needed to send their opponents packing.
100 Thieves will need to defeat mousesports later today to make it into the playoffs.
