Nigma complete a reverse sweep over Team Secret at the WePlay! Tug of War event
Team Secret and Nigma were the two teams which would play in
the grand finals of the WePlay! Dota 2 Tug of War: Mad Moon event as the
tournament reached its final day of play.
Opening the final day of play would be the lower bracket
finals between Virtus.pro and Nigma, a rematch of the group stage series
between the two teams. While VP were able to come out victorious in the early
stages of the event, the lower bracket finals were a completely different story
– with Nigma destroying the hometown team. This gave us another rematch and a
spectacular one at that, with Kuro ‘KuroKy’ Salehi Takhasomi taking on Clement ‘Puppey’
Ivanov in a best-of-five championship brawl.
This far at the WePlay! Dota 2 Tug of War: Mad Moon event,
Secret had only dropped a single game and that was to Nigma in the upper
bracket semi-finals. However, the team were unbeaten in a full series since the
beginning of the event and definitely went into the series as the favourites –
especially since Nigma failed to qualify for the upcoming Minor and Major rotation.
While Nigma did begin the series by taking control of the opening game, it did
not last very long as Secret turned up the pressure to claim the victory and
followed up with a dominant performance to take game two and series-point.
But then came game three, where a seemingly completely different Nigma squad came out to fight. Nigma, with their backs now against the wall, were ready to show why you never count them out. In two games that were 26-minutes each, Nigma were able to complete tie up the series and take us to a magnificent fifth game to decide who would become the champion of the Tug of War event.
After two losses in a row for Secret, everything seemed to fall apart, as Nigma were the ones to take control of the decisive game five. They gave Secret no real openings and with a total reverse sweep, Nigma proved their strength, giving Secret their first series loss since December at the ONE Esports Dota 2 World Pro Invitational.
While Nigma may not have made it to either the upcoming
Minor or Major, they manage to hold strong and break Secret and claim the trophy
at the WePlay! Dota 2 Tug of War: Mad Moon event. For Team Secret, they will
now head into preparations for ESL One Los Angeles 2020.
