Zain wins Smash Melee Singles at Slippi Champions League Week 2

Zain Naghmi won Super Smash Bros. Melee Division 1 Singles at Slippi Champions League Week 2 on October 18. After losing in Week 1 Finals, he made it his goal is to win Division 1 for every remaining week of the League.

Zain ran through the bracket with very little opposition. He started with a 3-0 win over Avery “Ginger” Wilson, the opponent he chose for himself after last week’s event. Then, he faced Cody “iBDW” Schwab in Semifinals. Despite dropping the first game of their set, Zain overcame iBDW in the next three games.

Finally, Zain faced Edgard “n0ne” Sheleby in Finals. Zain had never dropped a set to n0ne, and he managed to keep this flawless win streak intact. He beat n0ne 3-1 in order to claim 1st place at Slippi Champions League Week 2.

The rest of Division 1

Although Zain’s victory was perhaps predictable, it would’ve been hard to call n0ne’s 2nd place finish. He started the bracket with a 3-2 win over Justin “Plup” McGrath, whom he had never beaten before. In addition, n0ne defeated Joseph “Mang0” Marquez 3-1 in Semifinals, marking his second-ever win over the Melee god. Previously, n0ne became the first Captain Falcon player to beat Mang0 in roughly a decade at EGLX 2019.

Mang0 and iBDW rounded out the top 4 of Slippi Champions League Week 2. In Quarterfinals, Mang0 defeated Justin “Wizzrobe” Hallett 3-1. Meanwhile, iBDW beat Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma 3-1, a repeat of his 6-2 win from their money match two days earlier. Interestingly, this week’s top 4 comprised the same four players as last week’s top 4.

As with the first week, the top 4 players got to choose their first opponents for the upcoming week. Week 3 will feature the following Division 1 matches:

  • Zain vs. Joseph “Azel” Resplandor
  • iBDW vs. Plup
  • n0ne vs. Johnny “S2J” Kim
  • Mang0 vs. Griffin “Captain Faceroll” Williams

Other results from Slippi Champions League Week 2

Week 2 of the Slippi Champions League featured a great deal of movement, with three players moving into Division 1 for the first time. Perhaps most notable among these was Azel, who was not even ranked in the 2019 top 100. Azel managed to upset Zachary “SFAT” Cordoni and Hungrybox. As a result, he became the first player to make it all the way from the Rollback Rumble qualifiers to Division 1. Amazingly, he did so in only two weeks, the quickest possible time frame.

In addition, Captain Faceroll and S2J made it into Division 1 for the first time. Captain Faceroll defeated Zaid “Spark” Ali 3-1 in Division 2, then Wizzrobe 3-2 in Division 1 Relegation. S2J scored a pair of 3-0 wins to advance into Division 1, dominantly conquering Dawud “Aklo” Rahman and Ginger.

Notably, none of the players who qualified at Rollback Rumble: SCL Q2 won their Division 2 Relegation matches. As a result, none of this week’s Division 2 players lost their spots in the Slippi Champions League.
