Dungeons & Dragons Film Synopsis Appears Online, And It’s A Heist Movie

The official synopsis for Paramount Picture’s upcoming Dungeons & Dragons film has supposedly been revealed online. The highly-anticipated movie is set in the fantasy world made famous by the role-playing tabletop game of the same name. However, this new film adaptation sounds surprisingly more heist than hocus-pocus.

According to the synopsis found on U.S Copyright Office, the film will utilize the class system made famous by the TTRPG with thieves, barbarians, druids, and wizards all making an appearance. The synopsis reads;

“An ex-Harper turned thief escapes from prison with his partner, a female barbarian, and reunites with a no-talent wizard and a druid new to their team in an effort to rob the cheating conman who stole all their loot from the heist that landed them behind bars, and used it to install himself as the Lord of Neverwinter. Only the traitor is allied with a powerful Red Wizard who has something far more sinister in store.”

Looks like the film will take on the similar RPG scenario of a group of misfits coming together to save the world. However, the added Oceans Eleven-esque heist elements are an odd choice for the tabletop adaptation. However, with the TTRPG being as open and as malleable as it is, it makes sense that a plot thread like a botched heist would be needed to tie the main narrative together. While this synopsis offers more details than we have had since the film was announced, it is likely that it doesn’t give away the surprises that are sure to be in store.

The film is being helmed by writing and directing duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley with screenplay assistance from writer Derek Kolstad who previously worked on the John Wick franchise. It will star an ensemble cast including Chris Pine, in the leading role, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Rege-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant as the film’s villain. Production is just now beginning on the film which, after several delays, is now expected to release on March 2023.

To hold you over until the film’s release, Wizards of the Coast is celebrating all things Dungeons and Dragons this summer with the “Summer of Drizzt” celebration that will highlight new games, books, and more set in the fantasy TTRPG world.
