Forspoken Dev Aims To Achieve "The Highest Quality Visuals Ever" In An Open World Game

The devs behind Forspoken shared a new video dedicated to AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution technology. In its partnership showcase with AMD, Square Enix’s Luminous Productions noted that it aims to achieve “the highest quality visuals ever” in an open-world title.

There are glimpses of new gameplay footage from the ambitious project and some interesting comments from the studio head Takeshi Aramaki. According to Aramaki, the studio’s vision is “to create games unlike anything experienced before, fusing the world’s latest technologies with art.” Considering Forspoken’s fast-paced traversal mechanics, the devs had to be very precise with the optimization to deliver both high resolutions and a  steady frame rate.

This is where FidelityFX Super Resolution comes in. Luminous Productions calls it “an embodiment of that philosophy” and “an ideal upscaling solution” because of its compatibility with various platforms and fast processing speeds. The technology predictably provides a significant performance boost when running Forspoken at 4K/60 fps.

The developers noted it only took one day to implement the technology in Forspoken, and the process was very simple and straightforward. The studio didn’t notice any problems, even when using Dynamic Resolution. As Aramaki stated, “the difference between the highest quality settings and native resolution rendering is undetectable.” However, there was no comparison from an image quality standpoint with and without the usage of FidelityFX in the new video.

To summarize things up, Aramaki expressed his belief that AMD’s latest tech is raising standards across the entire industry, thus bringing more benefits for all players.

FidelityFX Super Resolution is akin to Nvidia’s DLSS, but there is still an important difference between them. AMD’s technology does not use machine learning algorithms, and the picture is upscaled and reconstructed in high definition from a lower resolution.

Forspoken will tell the story of Frey Holland, played by Ella Balinska, who was transported to the new world of Athia. The game is expected to arrive on both PS5 and PC in 2022, with no specific release date as of now. The Xbox version will arrive no earlier than 24 months later.
