Google continues to invest in its game streaming platform, Stadia, with a new game development studio. The new Stadia Games and Entertainment studio, located in Playa Vista, California, will be led by Shannon Studstill.
Studstill is a veteran of the game industry, having served more than 20 years at PlayStation developer Sony Santa Monica, most recently as vice president of product development and head of studio. She was credited as executive producer of 2018’s God of War reboot for PlayStation 4.
According to a blog post from vice president and head of Stadia Games and Entertainment Jade Raymond, the new Playa Vista-based studio “will focus on delivering exclusive games, using new gameplay mechanics, creative ways to play together and unique interaction models that we’re just starting to explore. While we’re not ready to share specific game plans yet, rest assured we are listening to what gamers want and adding our own Stadia twists to create new IP and experiences.”
Google announced its first internal development studio, Stadia Games and Entertainment in Montreal, last year at GDC 2019. Raymond oversees that studio, which is building original games and working with third-party developers on Stadia-exclusive titles. In December, Google announced it had acquired developer Typhoon Studios to boost its first-party game lineup. Google has not announced its first-party slate of games yet.
Stadia launched in certain territories in November 2019. While the platform has lacked original, Stadia-exclusive games, Google promises at least 10 timed exclusives for the platform in 2020.
