The PlayStation 5’s controller is one of the most impressive console controllers ever. Along with its suite of impressive features it also has a handy little microphone built right in.
Unfortunately, the microphone also comes unmuted by default. While you can mute it with just a quick press, it might be a little safer to change the setting and make the microphone start muted instead. The good news is you can do that with just a quick tweak of a setting in the PlayStation 5’s menu.
The first thing you’ll need to do is navigate to the PlayStation 5’s settings menu using the gear in the top right corner. Next, navigate all the way down to the “Sound” section of the settings menu. Once you’re on the Sound menu, select the option for “Microphone.”

From here you can do things like change which microphone your PlayStation 5 is using — if you have a headset you want to use instead of the controller, for instance. To mute the controller’s microphone, make sure that the Input Device is set to “Microphone on Controller,” then navigate to the “Microphone Status When Logged In” option.

This will bring up the option to either turn the microphone on when you log into your console, or to mute it. Change this option from on to mute and you won’t have to worry about your PlayStation 5 picking up any accidental background noise that wasn’t intended for your online teammates.
