Nintendo Direct 2020: Is the next Direct coming in March following E3 cancellation?

Switch gamers are still waiting for the next Nintendo Direct event to be held which isn’t focused on just one game. We’ve had one for Animal Crossing and another for the Pokemon franchise but it’s been months since we had a Direct showcasing new games. And one is sorely needed in the coming months if Nintendo is looking to build hype before the big Holiday season.

So when is the next Nintendo Direct event being held by the Japanese game giant?

Unfortunately, Nintendo hasn’t said when they’re planning its next event, with the only one scheduled being E3 2020.

And we just found that the big gaming expo in LA has now been cancelled due to concerns regarding the Coronavirus.

A statement from the ESA confirms: “After careful consultation with our member companies regarding the health and safety of everyone in our industry – our fans, our employees, our exhibitors and our longtime E3 partners – we have made the difficult decision to cancel E3 2020, scheduled for June 9-11 in Los Angeles.

“Following increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 virus, we felt this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation.

“We are very disappointed that we are unable to hold this event for our fans and supporters. But we know it’s the right decision based on the information we have today.

“Our team will be reaching out directly to exhibitors and attendees with information about providing full refunds.

“We are also exploring options with our members to coordinate an online experience to showcase industry announcements and news in June 2020.”

Since this announcement, Nintendo has shared its own update on the situation, confirming their support for the move.

Nintendo also confirmed that they would need to share their own plans on how to replace its E3 plans.

Shared via Gamespot, the Nintendo statement adds: “Nintendo supports the ESA’s decision to cancel this year’s E3 to help protect the health and safety of everyone in our industry–our fans, our employees, our exhibitors and our longtime E3 partners.

“We would like to express our concern and support for all those affected by the COVID-19 outbreak during this challenging time.

“We”ll continue to be flexible and redirect our efforts to other ways of keeping our fans up to date about our activities and products.

“Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, large industry events may be untenable for the foreseeable future. But we are considering various ways to engage with our fans and will have more to share as the year continues.”

Fans are certainly ready to be updated with the next games coming to the Nintendo Switch console in 2020.

Latest rumours have indicated that the finishing touches are being put on the first major Nintendo Direct since last September. However, new claims have said this broadcast is expected to take place towards the end of the month.

And, according to this alleged leak, there will be a Nintendo Indies broadcast in March before the next Nintendo Direct.

The news comes courtesy of VentureBeat’s Jeff Grubb who on Twitter posted: “OK. Look. Nintendo is far into the process of preparing a Direct.

“It’s likely coming next week. That could change.

“Pencil in March 18 (maybe March 19). It’ll have a number of third-party games along with whatever it shows to fill out its 2020 lineup.”
