Returnal: Can You Save The Game?

A run in Returnal can potentially last hours, so you might find yourself eager to save so that you can return to the same cycle later. This makes a lot of sense, especially if you have survived for longer than usual and have an array of powerful items.

Here’s everything you need to know about saving your game in Returnal.

Can You Save Your Game During A Cycle In Returnal?

Unfortunately, there is no way to save your progress whilst playing Returnal. Each time you start a cycle, it could last anywhere between a few minutes and a few hours, but you won’t be able to just save and walk away for a few days to take a break.

When you go to the pause menu, you will see that there isn’t a way to save or quit to the main menu. When Returnal starts up, you won’t even go to a main menu — you’ll just be thrown straight back to the Crash Site, ready to start another run.

This means that if you close the game or power off your PS5 during a run, you will lose any progress made whilst playing your current cycle, and Selene will start over from the Crash Site.

How Can You Take A Break From Returnal?

If you need to step away from Returnal for a short while, there are a few options.

You could just pause the game, so that you can head off for a bit and then resume the game when you are ready.

However, if you need to go to work, or get some sleep whilst you’re away, use Rest Mode. This will keep your game progress suspended, whilst using minimal power to keep the PS5 turned on. This is even how Housemarque, the developers of Returnal, suggest taking a break.

Can You Play Another Game And Then Come Back To Returnal?

Since the PS5 has no way to keep multiple games open at once, you cannot open another game and then return to the same point in Returnal. This will close the game, placing you back at the Helios Crash Site next time you start it up.

Before you close Returnal, make sure you are comfortable with losing the progress on your current run. If not, Rest Mode has never been more convenient.
