Starfield is over 30 hours long – bigger than Skyrim and Fallout 4

Todd Howard has shared some details regarding Starfield’s length and how he thinks the game will be perfect for the modding community.

There’s no question that Starfield will be a huge game, in both senses of the word. During its gameplay reveal at the Xbox showcase, Bethesda promised well over 1,000 different planets for players to explore.

Including side quests and exploration, Starfield should offer hundreds of hours of gameplay. However, it sounds like the main story alone will be rather meaty.

Director Todd Howard recently said that Starfield’s story is longer than normal for a Bethesda game and could take more than 30, even 40 hours, to complete.

It should be stressed that this is only if players focus all their energy on the main story and aren’t distracted by other side content, such as building your own bases and spaceships.

This is apparently because the game features a lot of main story quests, with Howard estimating there are roughly 20% more of them than in previous Bethesda role-players.

For comparison’s sake, HowLongToBeat.com lists The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim’s main story as taking an average of 25 and a half hours to complete, whereas Fallout 4’s takes 27 hours.

Howard adds that there are already plans for DLC expansions to add even more to the game’s runtime, but he also believes the modding community will contribute to Starfield’s longevity.

‘We’ve learned that people do play our games for a really, really long time,’ he told IGN. ‘They’re still playing Skyrim – not straight for 10 years, but they leave it and they come back and there’s extra content.

‘Certainly we’re going to be doing extra content for this game, and we love our modding community. We actually think this game, for our modding community, is going to be a dream as there’s so much they could do.’

Part of Skyrim’s success can also be attributed to its numerous re-releases, as it’s now available on practically every modern platform. Starfield won’t have that luxury as it’s slated to be an Xbox and PC exclusive.

As for what comes after Starfield, that’s obviously The Elder Scrolls 6, but Howard has admitted that there are already plans to do Fallout 5.

Starfield releases for Xbox Series X/S and PC in 2023.
