Miles "Tails" Prower, Sonic's genius kid brother and best buddy, will be voiced by his video game voice actor, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, in the upcoming Sonic movie sequel.
O'Shaughnessy, who has been voicing Tails since the Sonic Boom days of the mid-2010s, made the announcement on Twitter on Tuesday. She wrote that she was "taking my old pal Tails for another adventure," and announced that she had been cast to voice the character in the movie, and said she can't wait for fans to see him on the big screen.
When the twin-tailed fox made a cameo appearance at the end of the first Sonic movie, fans were hopeful that he might play a bigger role in the sequel. The only question was, would Paramount allow O'Shaughnessy to retain her voice-over role of the young tech prodigy? According to Tails Channel, sources close to the Sonic sequel said she was held in consideration for a long time to voice him following the cameo appearance in the first film. Today, O'Shaugnessey has confirmed that she is returning to voice the lovable little fox, and fans, as well as her peers, are applauding her.
O'Shaughnessy will be joining Ben Schwartz, who leads the movie as the voice of the titular Blue Blur, and Idris Elba, who announced four months ago that he would be voicing Knuckles the Echidna. The only caveat is, he won't be giving him a sexy voice.
O'Shaughnessy reprising her role as Tails in the Sonic movie sequel is considered a big win for Sonic fans and the voice acting world in general. It's very rare for a voice actor involved with the original source material to get cast in a big-budget animated film based on it. Illumination cast Chris Pratt to voice Mario in the animated Super Mario movie and relegated long-time Mario voice actor Charles Martinet to more minor roles, for example. Luckily, Sonic fans will get to enjoy O'Shaugnessey's performance as Tails once again.
