Although the original Dark Souls trilogy is over, some are still looking for similar titles to satisfy their needs. Mortal Shell seems to be the next one in line, deliberately marketing itself as a “soulslike.”
Developed by Cold Symmetry and published by PlayStack, Mortal Shell is a somewhat similar game to other Souls-like games, but offers its own original and unique take on gameplay elements. For example, players get to control an entity that has the ability to occupy deceased bodies of warriors and fighters, each equipped with their own set of skills and abilities. As players progress though the game, they’ll get the chance to further evolve the skills and gain the ability to craft and upgrade various weapons during the story.
Of course, being a Souls-adjacent game, combat and enemies will play an important role too. Knowing how to utilize the skills and abilities of each host the player will possess will prove to be important depending on which enemy or boss they will fight. Chances are, the combat will be unforgiving (as these games usually go,) but fair and satisfactory in the end as well.
Although no release date has been announced for Mortal Shell, the game is scheduled to come out for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC some time in the fourth quarter of 2020. Considering that the end of 2020 will also see the release of the next generation consoles, there might be a chance that Mortal Shell will release for them as well. However, until the developer studio confirms that, it looks like current generation consoles will be the only ones to have access to the game.
