Respawn Doesn't Have A New Titanfall Game In Development

Despite reports circulating in 2019 that developer Respawn Entertainment was working on a “premium” Titanfall experience after the launch of Apex Legends, the studio has confirmed once again that a new entry is not in the works.

In an interview with IGN, studio co-founder and CEO Vince Zampella said that while Titanfall has been shelved for the moment, he’s optimistic the franchise might make a return.

“There’s nothing currently in development,” Zampella told IGN. “But it’s always there. You see the little bits of stuff coming back [through the lore in Apex Legends]. At some point, I would personally like to see some kind of resurrection there. We’ll see if I can make that happen.”

In early February 2019, Respawn said Titanfall 3 was not in development just as the studio dropped its free-to-play and wildly successful battle royale game Apex Legends. A few days after this announcement, publisher EA said Respawn was prepping a “premium” Titanfall experience, with Zampella saying the studio was “working on more Titanfall for later in [2019].” In an earnings call that year, EA noted that it’s excited “to grow Apex Legends and related Titanfall experiences.”

All of this would seem to indicate that a new Titanfall of some kind–whether a “premium” title or some sort of spin-off–was in the works before Zampella dashed all hopes with his latest comments. It’s unclear if whatever Titanfall project Respawn was working on has been canceled, but the studio did confirm that all Titanfall plans had been delayed in April 2019 so that it can focus on Apex Legends.

Titanfall 2, which released in 2016, was the last mainline entry in the series and earned a 9/10 in our Titanfall 2 review. A real-time strategy spin-off of the franchise, Titanfall: Assault, hit Android and iOS devices in August 2017. And unfortunately, the free-to-play Titanfall game aimed at the Asian market called Titanfall Online was canceled in July 2018. Though Apex Legends takes place in the Titanfal universe, it’s been almost two years since Titanfall has seen the light of day.
