Xbox’s new FPS Boost feature can double frame rates for backward-compatible games
Playing older games on the new generation of consoles is almost always better thanks to the improved power, but Microsoft is taking things a step further with a new feature called FPS Boost for Xbox Series X and Series S. FPS Boost will provide a frame rate increase for certain backward-compatible Xbox One titles when played on current-generation Xbox consoles, doubling or quadrupling the games’ original frame rates.
FPS Boost will initially be available for five games: Far Cry 4, New Super Lucky’s Tale, Sniper Elite 4, EA Sports UFC 4, and Watch Dogs 2. The frame rate for each of these games will be significantly increased, according to Microsoft, which means 60 fps in the case of UFC 4, or all the way up to 120 fps for New Super Lucky’s Tale.
Microsoft said Wednesday in an Xbox Wire post that the company “partnered closely with developers to enhance the experience while maintaining the game’s original intent” for titles that support FPS Boost.

Once the feature goes live, players will be able to open the “Manage Game” option and find a new menu called “Compatibility Options.” Here players can turn on features like Auto HDR and FPS Boost if it’s available in the game they’re playing. Meanwhile, a small icon will let players know if FPS Boost is on once they press the Nexus button.
Microsoft doesn’t have a firm release date for FPS Boost yet, but does mention that it’s scheduled to be part of this year’s spring console update. On top of a release date, players can look forward to announcements of new games that will support FPS Boost in the coming months.
